The mischievous twinkle in R’s eyes tipped me off to his wit and humor even before our first meeting. R noted the ridiculous or quirky side of every situation and often had us doubled over in laughter at his incredibly direct and dry responses to boarding school prompts. As we got to know each other better, I sensed a boy who was eager to learn and desperate to improve and work hard. He often skyped me at 2 or 3am with a grammar question or asking how he could manage his time more efficiently and accomplish more in a shorter period. Initially, R rarely looked beyond the surface and struggled to articulate meaning behind events or experiences. As we brainstormed what he liked about Hotchkiss or noticed during his trip, I still remember his awed response that he could not believe that students wore flip-flops. Coming from an extremely formal and stayed British boarding school where sports jackets, khakis, ties, loafers and bowlers formed the expected attire, R was flabbergasted by the seeming nonchalance and informality of US boarding schools. We used this observation as the starting point for his ‘why Hotchkiss’ essay as he spoke about the type of community this embodied and why he wanted to join it. These small victories made the thrill of his acceptance to Hotchkiss all the more exciting.
在和Richard面談幾次后,有兩件事給我印象深刻。第一是他有些調(diào)皮的眼神,透著一種機(jī)智和幽默。第二則是他對于學(xué)校文書題目生硬且過于直白的回答,經(jīng)常讓我們?nèi)炭〔唤?。在頭腦風(fēng)暴的過程中,當(dāng)我們問他為什么想要加入霍奇基斯,對這所學(xué)校有什么印象時(shí),他回答說當(dāng)他參觀霍奇基斯的校園時(shí),對于學(xué)生們隨意的穿著感到十分震驚。在英國讀書的他根本無法想象學(xué)生們穿著人字拖走來走去-在英國,西服、襯衫、領(lǐng)帶才是學(xué)生應(yīng)該有的穿著。然而,這也使他開始思考美國寄宿高中的學(xué)術(shù)風(fēng)格-尊重學(xué)生的意愿,并且賦予學(xué)生足夠的自由去追尋自己的興趣。最后,我們一致決定將他對于英國和美國兩種截然不同的文化的對比和反思作為文書的切入點(diǎn),闡述他想要加入霍奇基斯,開啟一段新的探索之旅的強(qiáng)烈愿望。當(dāng)收到霍奇基斯的錄取信時(shí),我們相信這所全美頂級的寄宿高中也一定喜歡上了這個(gè)擁有獨(dú)特視角的英倫小紳士。
